The Youth Exchange: Starting the selection

The target group for the project’s main activity, the youth exchange, are young people age 15-30, half of them visually impaired and the other half non-disabled. There will be a total of 24 youngsters, 8 from each partner country (North Macedonia, Turkey and Romania). The typical, non-visual impaired participants, will not only take an active part in the project activities, but will also have a role as a facilitators and helpers for visual impaired youngsters.

Summarizing, for the youth exchange that will take place in Cluj-Napoca (7 activity days + 2 travel days), each partner will send a group of 11 participants (4 visually impaired and 4 non-visually impaired youngsters, 2 youth leaders and 1 accompanying person), citizens or legal residents of North Macedonia, Romania or Turkey.

The visually and non-visually impaired youngsters:

  • Age 15-30;
  • Ready to interact with their disabled/non-disabled peers in an active and supportive way;

The youth leaders:

  • Age 18+;
  • Connected to their sending organization and with experience in working with disabled and non-disabled youngsters;
  • Have English language skills;

The selection method will include an info pack and a unique application form elaborated by Asociatia Babilon Travel which will be disseminated to all the partner organizations. The candidates will fill it out and the sending partners will evaluate and make the final selection, based on the following criteria:

  • Status of the participant: disabled/non-disabled youngster, youth leader or accompanying person;
  • Motivation to get involved in the work with the visually impaired youth;
  • Potential and availability to multiply and disseminate the project’s results, by:
    • Writing stories/posts/articles about their experiences in the project and then post these on their websites, social media platforms and in the project Facebook group and page;
    • Participating to the preparatory meetings (on-line or face-to-face) and the dissemination events organized by the sending organizations on local level;
    • Preparing, inside their country team, the intercultural night;
  • Committed to attend for the full duration of the course;
  • Agree to respect all Romanian regulations regarding the pandemic during all the activities of the training course;

Since there will be 12 participants facing visual impairment (or even more, depending on the applications sent and the selection process), each partner will also select an accompanying person, citizen or legal resident of the country of the sending organization, that will support the disabled participants during the journey and during the activities. These accompanying persons should be:

  • Age 18+;
  • Experienced in guiding disabled persons;
  • Ready to support the visually impaired youngsters 24/7 during the journey to Romania and back, and during all the activities;
  • Able to use English as working language.

At the end of the youth exchange, each youngster will receive a Youthpass certificate.
